Frances Role In The War
Benjamin Franklin went over to France to ask for help because of their adversity with the British. We had just won the Battle of Saratoga and the French thought we had a chance. The French joined our army to defeat the British and end their grudge with them. The French supplied them bayonets for all the muskets and used their navy because the Americans didn't have one.
Marque de Lafayette
Marque was a very wealthy nobleman from France. His father was killed in the 7 year war by the British. Marque wanted to avenge his father's death. He paid his own soldiers to fight in the war, and he bought his own ship too. At first the Americans did not want him helping them. But then he said he would pay for everything himself, the Americans let him participate because they needed all the help they could get.
Baron Von Steuben
Baron Von Steuben or Friedrich Von Steuben was a drillmaster for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He told Benjamin Franklin that he was a general for the Prussian army even though he was only a captain. Nevertheless, Friedrich became a great drillmaster. He trained the militia at Valley Forge to use bayonets and muskets, while speaking in a mix of German and English.
